2019 Seat Belt Survey Report

Atelior, LLC conducted a comprehensive seat-belt usage study in the State of Colorado from June 2 to June 15, 2019. Trained observers collected data at 770 sites in 31 counties. A total of 148,095 vehicles were observed, including cars, vans, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks, and select commercial vehicles (10,000 pounds and under). Drivers and front seat outboard passengers of the eligible vehicles were observed for seat-belt usage at predetermined observation sites throughout the state.

2014 State of Colorado Child Safety Restraint System, Booster, and Juvenile Seat Belt Survey

The Institute of Transportation Management (ITM) at Colorado State University conducted a comprehensive study of child safety restraint systems (child car seats and booster seats) and juvenile seat belt usage from June 15 through 28, 2014. The survey was designed to collect and analyze data related to usage of seat belts for drivers, safety restraint systems for children (newborn - 4 years), and booster and seat belt usage for juveniles (5 - 15 years). Vehicles included in the survey were passenger cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs used for private transportation. Commercial vehicles were not included in the study.

The annual seat belt usage assessment of teen drivers and teen front seat outboard passengers of non-commercial vehicles was conducted in the State of Colorado by the Institute of Transportation Management (ITM) from April 21 through May 2, 2014. The study was sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Office of Transportation Safety, Occupant Protection Program and involved observations at 200 sites in 18 counties across the State of Colorado. Specifically, teen drivers and teen front seat outboard passengers were observed for seat belt usage within cars, vans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and light trucks normally used for personal transportation. Commercial vehicles were excluded from this survey.

In May 2014, the Institute of Transportation Management of Colorado State University conducted a pre-mobilization seat belt usage assessment in the State of Colorado. The study was sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Office of Transportation Safety and involved observations at 222 sites in 29 counties across the State of Colorado. The survey was conducted from May 11 through 17, 2014, as a β€œpre-enforcement wave” study, and included drivers and front seat outboard passengers within cars, vans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), light trucks, and select commercial vehicles 10,000 pounds and under.
